Over a century of expertise
Recognized expertise in butter production
Cremo's history began with butter production, thanks to the Centrale de beurre, created in 1917, in the midst of the First World War. Faced with food shortages, the federal authorities asked the cantons to set up structures capable of regulating butter production and supply.
The plant continues to operate after the war. In 1927, the plant took the decisive step of becoming a public limited company under the name Cremo SA. This transformation marked the official birth of Cremo as an independent, sustainable organization, ready to meet the challenges of the future.
Cremo then modernized its infrastructure to become a full-fledged production plant. It gradually acquired new equipment:
- In 1927, a machine for closing cream cans.
- In 1928, a new steam boiler.
- In 1929, a second churn for butter production.
- In 1930, refrigerators and cooling and pasteurization systems.
The manufacturing process also evolved: cream was no longer left to mature naturally, but was treated in maturators, where it was inoculated with prepared cultures, guaranteeing consistent quality. In 1932, thanks to substantial profits, Cremo financed the distribution of refrigerators to dairy farmers to facilitate cream cooling. Against a backdrop of economic crisis and overproduction in the 1930s, Cremo played a key role in managing dairy surpluses. It produced 40 kg lumps of butter, protected by a layer of salt to ensure their preservation.
In this way, Cremo has gone from being a powerhouse designed to support producers to a company capable of adapting to economic challenges while guaranteeing high-quality butter production.
For over 100 years, Cremo has been sublimating milk fat to produce butter. Thanks to a variety of manufacturing processes, Cremo offers a wide range of butters: classic butter, spreadable butter, organic butter, cooking butter and other specialties.
Cremo proudly contributes to the production of the famous "Floralp" and "Le Beurre" brands, true symbols of quality and tradition.
